Who We Are

PROST! Exercise 4 Prostate Cancer Inc. (known as PROST!) a low-cost, evidence-based group exercise program specifically designed for men diagnosed with prostate cancer.  Our program caters to men both pre-treatment and post-treatment, aiming to support physical health recovery, rehabilitation, and psychosocial well-being.

Our History and Status

Founded in 2012, PROST! a community-based, registered not-for-profit association and registered charity (ACNC) with Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status.  Since our inception, we have been committed to providing accessible and effective support for men affected by prostate cancer.  Currently, PROST! operates six venues in the Perth metropolitan area.

Our Approach

Our program is grounded in a biopsychosocial model of cancer care. We emphasize the interconnectedness of physical, psychological, and social well-being when designing and implementing exercise interventions.  The group-based exercise sessions, complemented by men’s coffee clubs at each venue, foster a supportive community environment that enhances psychosocial health. This holistic approach is encapsulated in our tagline:  “Muscle, Mateship, Mood.”

The Exercise Program

The PROST! exercise program is evidence-based and focuses on:

  • Strengthening pelvic floor muscles to help alleviate urinary incontinence and, potentially, support erectile function recovery.
  • Building core strength, cardiovascular fitness, and muscular resistance.
  • Improving balance and coordination to promote overall physical health as men age.
  • Providing targeted, age-appropriate exercises designed to maintain and enhance fitness levels.

All exercises are supervised by university-qualified and accredited exercise physiologists, ensuring safety and effectiveness.

Research and Evidence

The foundation of our program is based on research conducted at the University of Western Australia by our founder, Dr Jo Milios, as part of her PhD thesis.  This research demonstrated the effectiveness of pelvic floor exercises tailored for men with prostate cancer using the instruction of “Nuts 2 Guts” for activation of their pelvic floors through exercise routines.

Dr Milios’s brother, a prominent Perth Urologist who has performed countless prostatectomies, provided her with valuable surgical insights into men’s anatomy and physiology.  Our program continues to be validated by ongoing research from around the world, highlighting its benefits, including improved outcomes for metastatic prostate cancer treatment.

Support Group

The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA), with which we are affiliated, recognizes us as a prostate cancer support group. Our organization supports PCFA Mates Connect, PCFA Prostate cancer Nurses, who are there when you need them, just a phone call away offering support, so you never need to travel the journey alone.
