An overview of the beginnings of Mr Perfect, and how we have grown from just one BBQ after a soccer match to over 40 BBQs around the country every month.
Why does Mr Perfect exist?
Growing evidence suggests that men in Australia suffer overwhelmingly from societal disconnectedness, particularly as they age and life circumstances change, such as the breakdown of relationships, retirement, relocation, or career setbacks. These seismic changes often result in men losing touch with their family, friends, and community.
Increasing social disconnectedness among men has real and troubling consequences. It is linked to rising rates of mental ill-health, including depression and suicidal ideation. In Australia, around 1-in-8 men experience depression and 1-in-5 experience anxiety at some point in their lives. Alarmingly, men account for 75% of all suicides in Australia, with approximately 7 men dying by suicide every day.
We have found that by providing a simple, regular, and particularly informal meeting over a typical Aussie barbecue, men are willing to come together and talk about issues they may not feel comfortable discussing with close family or friends. It is the casual, judgment-free environment that helps break down emotional barriers. Men realise that others are going through the same issues.
Our history shows that participants in our BBQs enjoy better mental health, creating a more connected and resilient community. We've built a growing network of men who have found strength in connection and a renewed sense of belonging. It's not about solving every problem—it's about showing up, being present, and reminding each other that it's OK to talk.
With monthly barbecues hosted around the nation, our mission is to reach as many men as possible, offering a warm, non-judgmental space where they can talk openly and honestly about "all things life" - a space where mateship grows and where men share stories, safe in the knowledge that they are not alone.
Our deep concern with the rising rates of depression and suicide in men drives our commitment to addressing the underlying social issues, particularly the erosion of connection and community. By providing a simple way for men to gather, chat, and listen, we hope to enable healthy mental wellbeing, one conversation at a time.
The lived experiences of attendees suggest that simply having a yarn with someone—whether a close friend or a stranger at the barbecue—can provide clarity, comfort, and the opportunity to consider a healthier path forward.
