After being diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in 2021, the Author sought a wellbeing app to support him on his healing journey. The app that stood out was an early version of MiOK[i], developed by DB Results[ii], a digital consulting company recognised as B Corp Certified[iii], for their positive impact.
MiOK began as an individual-focused wellbeing app, allowing users to securely monitor their feelings, log health and wellbeing aspects, and record significant results, appointments, and other key health information.
It has since evolved, offering customisable versions tailored to the needs of organisations, groups, and communities. This targeted communication and connection capability appealed to grassroots Men with Spirit[iv] men’s support groups and other organisations committed to improving their members' health and wellbeing. These capabilities include the ability to:
Men with Spirit is one of many men’s support groups in the Mornington Peninsula and Frankston LGAs, south of Melbourne. The group’s founders have been active in the Council-organised Men’s Wellbeing Network, promoting and supporting men’s support activities locally. Some of these groups were featured in a recent Council-funded video[v] discussing the benefits of men’s groups.
The Author was also a member of SIAG/Frankston[vi], funded by the Victorian Department of Health. This experience highlighted the significant unmet need for accessible information and resources to better connect men and combat loneliness in the community.
Men with Spirit provides the MiOK app to its members as part of a layered support approach, including weekly or fortnightly meetings, workshops, access to specialist 1:1 support services, a successful podcast series[vii], and information dissemination via social media. MiOK is pivotal for disseminating the group’s information and providing self-assessment and accountability tools.
Based on this on-ground experience with men’s wellbeing issues, this presentation discusses how MiOK’s ‘Connect’ capabilities can be leveraged by organisations to improve connectivity with members, leading to better health outcomes.
